On his appointment as Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy in 1806 Sir John Soane began to arrange the books, casts, and models in his collection for the benefit of his students, and in 1833 he negotiated an Act of Parliament to settle and preserve the house and collection for the benefit of `amateurs and students' in architecture, painting and sculpture. Since 1984 it has been the intention of the Curators to make the collections available to a wider public; the first catalogue of Soane's important collection of Renaissance drawings was published in December 1998, and further catalogue raisonnés of the collections in the Sir John Soane's Museum are forthcoming.
