Zones of Violence works against the grain of individual national histories, recognizing that war, refugee flows, overt or covert foreign interference, and environmental degradation rarely pay heed to internationally recognized borders. The 'violence' in the series title signals an escape from essentialist notions of genocide and a focus instead on mass violence perpetrated directly or indirectly by states or population groups within the zone in question against other population groups. The zones themselves owe their existence less to deep historic formations than to comparatively recent developments. Taken together, then, the volumes in the series are a study in the murderous trajectory of modernity rather than an examination of some immutable aspect of the human
condition.
