for SATB and percussion instruments (4 sand blocks (optional), 2 rainsticks, 2 claves, 1 shaker, and a low-pitched tomtom played with hard sticks) OR SATB and low-pitched tomtom played with hard sticks, and marimba. This unusual and highly effective choral cantata in five sections uses poems which are a celebration of how the living spirit of the drum is brought alive. This is an exuberant and rhythmic work, and hugely exciting. All percussion is played by members of the chorus. The unpitched percussion parts are printed in the vocal score. Forces or CategorySATB &
percussionDuration12 minutesDifficultyEasy to Moderately difficultProgramme NotesIn 1984, I was very fortunate to visit Uganda, where a drum-maker made for me a beautiful drum with a snakeskin head. Ill never forget sitting in the plane to come home, and seeing by chance the baggage handlers loading my drum with incredible respect and care. The drum to them was a living spirit. These poems are a celebration of how that spirit is brought alive. The ritual of the construction of the drum is enacted, as
the component parts are drawn from the surrounding nature, a nature that gives of itself in an almost sacrificial way. We hear how the goat is killed for its skin, the tree, which bleeds cedar dark when cut, is given for the body of the drum, and how the sticks and rattles are taken, all to begin a new life as companions to the gods, music and the dance. This piece was commissioned by the Oxford Pro Musica Singers and is was given its first performance on the occasion of their twentieth anniversary. © Bob Chilcott Reproduced by permission of Oxford University Press

Bob Chilcott (b.1955) Bob Chilcott has been involved with choral music all his life, first as a Chorister and then a Choral Scholar at King's College, Cambridge. Later, he sang and composed music for 12 years with the King's Singers. His experiences with that group, his passionate commitment to young and amateur choirs, and his profound belief that music can unite people, have inspired him both to compose full-time and, through proactive workshopping, to promote choral music worldwide.Bob Chilcott's website

"The total duration of this work is approximately 12 minutes and I have no doubt that, for a choir capable of achieving the subtlety of expression, rhythmic vitality and dealing with the sometimes complex lines, this would provide a very worthwhile challenge. As the cover note says, it has the capacity to be 'exuberant, rhythmic and hugely exciting'. Music Teacher Nov 2000"
