This is an attractive, not difficult carol to a traditional Scottish text and with a gentle 'folk-y' feel. A flowing melody, complete with flattened 7ths and delicate Scotch snaps, appears in various guises, each verse ending with a lullaby refrain. It is available in both SATB and SA versions. Alan Bullard (b.1947) Alan Bullard was born in London, and studied with Herbert Howells at the Royal College of Music, and at Nottingham University. He enjoyed a successful career in music education, most recently as Head of Composition at Colchester Institute and as an examiner for ABRSM. Recently he has devoted his time to composition, editing, and arranging.
His music unfailingly appeals to both performers and audiences; he has written for all kinds of choirs, with instrumental works for soloists, ensembles, chamber orchestras, and a wind band festival. Alan is also a respected writer of music for examination syllabuses and educational albums. His major publications include the inspirational Oxford Book of Flexible Anthems and Oxford Book of Flexible Carols, Alan Bullard Carols, and Alan Bullard Anthems. He and his wife Janet also write the Pianoworks series for the older beginner.Alan Bullard's website

"I love the melody to which the opening lines are set; it flows so simply yet so beautifully in triple time, giving real tranquillity and restfulness to the music. The flattened 7ths and gentle scotch snaps within the melodic lines and the open 5ths in the piano writing all help to give the piece its wonderful Scottish character and charm.
