for solo cello and chamber orchestra Forces or CategorySolo cello & chamber orchestraDuration18 minutesDifficultyModerately difficultOrchestrationvc solo, 2 fl, 2 ob, 2 cl (+bcl), 2 bn, 2 hn, 2 tpt, 3 perc (tbells, tamb), timp, pn, hp, strProgramme NotesThis is a single movement work. It is
intended as a memorial to Kenneth Leighton, distinguished composer, pianist and teacher, who was the Reid Professor of Music at Edinburgh University from 1970 until his death in 1988. There are three clearly defined sections. The first is dark and brooding and aims to express a sense of spiritual desolation and loss. The mood gradually becomes more animated and the music slowly becomes transformed into the middle-section - a toccata-like passage of the type often used by Leighton (though there is no attempt to imitate his style). Here the music is angry and violent. A quiet, contemplative final section follows, recapitulating but transforming much of the material of the first section. © Edward Harper Reproduced by permission of Oxford University Press
