- A major new contribution to the literary analysis of ancient Greek lyric poetry
- Gives a detailed image of the history of Greek lyric poetry from seventh century to c.430 BC
A comprehensive literary commentary on many of the central pieces of Greek lyric poetry, including works by Alcman, Stesichorus, Sappho, Alcaeus, Ibycus, Anacreon, Simonides, Bacchylides, Pindar, Sophocles, and Euripides. The pieces chosen are usually the longest and best-preserved; a single large poem each is taken from Bacchylides and Pindar; two odes from tragedy illustrate the adoption of lyric into drama. The volume includes the Greek texts and apparatus, which incorporate fresh work on the papyri and numerous new suggestions. Introductions to each poet set the poetry in its historical and literary context. The book
brings textual and literary criticism of the poets together, providing a close and sustained analysis of important poems across the genre, and so enables the reader to see in detail the development and diversity of a remarkable body of poetry.Readership: Scholars and students interested in lyric poetry, especially ancient Greek lyric poetry, and ancient historians

"... to specialists, scholars and teachers it offers readings both original and illuminating which will enrich anyone's enjoyment and understanding of these texts." - The Journal of Classics Teaching "... one of the most remarkable features of the book is its seamless interweaving of the 'textual and literary traditions of scholarship' ... In that one is not faced with a barrage of posturing, but a direct engagement with the texts, Hutchinson demonstrates that sophisticated reading can be conveyed with clarity and style." - The Journal of Classics Teaching "A valuable contribution, not only to the understanding and appreciation of the poetry involved, but also of the poets themselves." - Bryn
Mawr Classical Review "Rarely does one find such high standards of textual and literary criticism combined." - Bryn Mawr Classical Review
