Success in reading and writing for all your upper juniors!
Read Write Inc. Comprehension Plus is a language programme for upper juniors. The resources for each year are an Anthology, a Pupils' Book, a Teacher's Handbook and a CD-ROM (PC only). Work centres around the texts in the Anthologies, which contain a selection of complete poems, play scripts and non-fiction works. There are both newly-commissioned and previously published texts written by leading authors including: Michael Morpurgo, Roger McGough, Jeremy Strong, Geraldine McCaughrean, Pie Corbett, Adrian Bradbury, Louise Kuenzler and Gill Howell.
Children are introduced to the text in a structured, teacher-led way, involving three readings of the text at increasing depth. A range of reading, writing, speaking and
listening and drama activities develop understanding further. The 'Big Question' links the fiction and non-fiction elements, encouraging children to reason, debate and think critically about the texts they have just read.
Read Write Inc. Comprehension Plus uses the successful methods of Ruth Miskin's Read Write Inc. teaching pedagogy, including effective ideas for partner work and classroom management strategies. Speaking and listening is at the core of the programme and is integrated throughout.
The programme is a perfect match to the renewed Framework. Text types have been chosen to support the PNS unit plans and writing support is also provided.
The Teacher's Handbooks show clearly how Framework objectives for
England and QCDA Assessment focuses are covered, and show links to the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish curricula. (Please note that the CD is PC only.)Features- Read Write Inc. Comprehension Plus will raise standards fast - taking your Year 5 and Year 6 children from a National Curriculum Level 3a to a Level 5 (5-14 Level C/Curriculum for Excellence First Level to 5-14 Level D/E/Curriculum for Excellence Second Level).
- Ruth Miskin's tried and tested Read Write Inc. pedagogy ensures that no child is left behind. The programme will develop pupils' reading, writing and language skills through the co-operative learning strategies that have been so successful in Read Write Inc.
schools.
- The fully-illustrated Anthology contains texts from leading contemporary children's authors such as Michael Morpurgo, Roger McGough, Jeremy Strong, Geraldine McCaughrean, Pie Corbett and Adrian Bradbury.
- The discussion of the 'Big Question', linking fiction and non-fiction, helps pupils develop as questioning readers and critical thinkers. It also gives a real reason for speaking and listening, already central to the Read Write Inc. pedagogy.
- The programme is based on complete texts not extracts, providing a 'real' reading experience and allowing a deeper comprehension of the text.
- The programme is a perfect match to the renewed Framework in England - it supports the 'simple view of reading' by
enriching vocabulary, and teaching key comprehension strategies to ensure all children become good readers and fluent writers.
- Clear links are provided to the English National Curriculum, the renewed Framework, the Curriculum for Excellence in Scotland, the Welsh and Northern Irish Curricula, and to the QCDA Assessment focuses.

"[Comments on Read Write Inc. Comprehension Plus]:
I must add how much I thought of the whole package. It all looks very exciting and I love the way the narrative 'knits' so well with the non-narrative yet takes it through to other parts of the curriculum." - Cuckoo Hall School
"I thought the overall premise and focus for the programme really extensive and useful and could see this as a powerful way of integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as elements of drama and role play." - Springfield School
"[Comments on Read Write Inc. pedagogy]:
Read Write Inc. actually teaches children to read and write. We love using this programme because children achieve so much so quickly. They want to read and write. It's the best literacy programme we have ever known." - Lorna Jackson, Headteacher, Maryland Primary School
"There are many dimensions to your programme that support teaching and learning...The successful teaching that has been evident since September has had beneficial effects on learning and behaviour across the school." - Sue Watts, Furrow Community School.
"Channel 4 featured Ruth Miskin and the Read Write Inc. method being used in schools in a series of programmes broadcast in Autumn 2007 and Summer 2008. Read Write Inc. raised standards and turned struggling and non-readers into more confident and competent readers."
